The importance of connecting with your injector

It's human nature to want to look our best, and for many people, that means altering our appearance in some way. Whether getting a haircut, new lashes, or more muscle that will make us look more attractive, we are all influenced by personal biases when it comes to aesthetics, and as Val Garland from "Glow Up" would say, let's have a conflab!

It is essential for both providers and patients to be aware of personal biases in cosmetic medicine and to take steps to mitigate their effects. We have different ideas about what constitutes our version of beauty, and our cultural backgrounds and personal experiences often shape these ideas, so during our first visit, it’s important to be clear about what you want, but if you don’t know, trust that we will tease them out together. I encourage patients to come for education, not the procedure. At one time or another, you may have felt rushed or reduced by a medical person-don't allow it. You can't possibly know how to make the best decision without education and understanding, and your comfort should be our first goal. I need your truth, so I can set your beauty free!

I tell my patients if I can't connect, I won't inject! That works both ways, guys. Do not have a procedure with someone who doesn't connect with you, despite their zillion-follower flash, it doesn’t necessarily make them right for you. Patients should also be willing to question recommendations and be given the time to understand different options. Sometimes that involves referring you to other providers. I often refer patients to various experts for lasers or surgery because not everything can be corrected with a needle (I’ve tried!). Those I refer to are also those I trust. That being said, if you are opposed to surgery, most providers will do everything to help the skin you're in, but we must share realistic expectations in the beginning. You’ll hear me say this A LOT: share your truth to build trust because our progress depends on it! By working together, provider(s) and patients can minimize dissatisfaction and maximize results.

When considering injections like tox or filler, here are six tips that can help you make the best decision for yourself:

  1. Do your research. It's important to learn about the different types of injections available and the potential risks and benefits associated with each. Talk to your provider about what's right for you and ask questions until you're comfortable with your decision.

  2. Be realistic about your expectations. Injections can't solve all your beauty woes, so be honest about what you hope to achieve. Discussing your goals with your injector is crucial to establishing a treatment plan that's right for you.

  3. Keep an open mind. There's no one-size-fits-all solution to injections, so be prepared to hear about a few different treatments before finding the one that's right for you.

  4. Trust your gut. If something doesn't feel right, speak up! If you have any concerns or questions about your treatment plan, don't hesitate to say so! There's no rush in feeling right.

  5. Talk budget! We can make a plan for anyone, but we must know what you have to work with and where you want to start.

  6. It's okay to come in not knowing ANYTHING about injections, but that tells me that you're trusting me to share my knowledge of what I think you need. I encourage you to have a slight idea of at least one thing you would like to improve, so I don't feel like I'm playing mental dodgeball. I have an overwhelming amount of information. You don't want it all on the first day. We'll address a few things to get you warmed up, start our first beauty goal and then make a plan on your second visit. Let curiousity supersede any needle fear you may have and make an appointment!
