6 Needle tips for Navigating a Cosmetic Procedure

It's human nature to want to look our best, and for many people, that means altering our appearance in some way. Whether it's getting a haircut, lashes or more muscles that will make us look more attractive, we are all influenced by personal biases when it comes to aesthetics, and as Val Garland from “Glow Up" would say, let’s have a conflab.

It is important for both providers and patients to be aware of personal biases in cosmetic medicine, and to take steps to mitigate their effects. We have different ideas about what constitutes our own version of beauty and these ideas are often shaped by our cultural backgrounds and personal experiences, so be clear what you’re after and if you don’t know, ask! I encourage patients to come for the education, not the procedure. We all have been made to feel silly or reduced when asking questions to a medical person at one time or another-don’t allow it. Your comfort should be our first goal

I tell my patients if I can’t connect, I won’t inject! That works both ways, guys. Do not have a procedure with someone who doesn’t connect with you, despite their zillion follower flash! Patients should also be willing to question recommendations and be given the time to understand what they’re being offered and sometimes that involves referring you to other providers. I refer patients to different providers for lasers or surgery all the time. Those I refer to are also those I trust. That being said, if you are averse to surgery, most providers will do everything to help the skin you're in, but realistic expectations must be shared in the beginning. I’ll say it first: share your truth because our progress depends on it! By working together, provider(s) and patients can minimize dissatisfaction and maximize results.

When considering injections like tox or filler, here are six tips that can help you make the best decision for yourself:

1. Do your research. Find someone who is CERTIFIED! Advanced, master or expert does not mean certified

It's important to learn about the different types of injections available and the potential risks and benefits associated with each. Talk to your provider about what's right for you and ask questions until you're comfortable with your decision.

2. Be realistic about your expectations.

Injections can't solve all of your beauty woes, so be honest with yourself about what you hope to achieve. Discussing your goals with your injector is a key part of establishing a treatment plan that's right for you.

3. Keep an open mind.

There's no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to injections, so be prepared to hear about a few different treatments before finding the one that's right for you.

4. Trust your gut.

If something doesn't feel right, speak up! If you have any concerns or questions about your treatment plan, don't hesitate to say so! There’s no rush in feeling right.

5. Talk budget!

We can make a plan for anyone, but we have to know what you have to work with and where you want to start. I want your truth so I can set your beauty free!

6. It’s okay to come in not knowing ANYTHING about injections, but that tells me that you’re trusting me to share my knowledge of what I think you need.

I encourage you to have a small idea of at least one thing you would like to improve so I don’t feel like I’m playing mental dodgeball. I have an overwhelming amount of information. You don’t want it all on the first day. We’ll address a few things to get you warmed up and it will be much easier to make a plan on your second visit.
